Is your small business firewall secure enough to protect you!?

This article from the Wall Street Journal validates what we’ve been noticing and socializing for years – that much of the small business community out there could really use an improvement on their networks defenses.

Many small businesses think that a simple firewall and Anti-Virus on the desktop is good enough — but that doesn’t always adequately defend against the latest scareware, malware, and other virus type programs you can pick up on the Internet!

One unfortunate newstand owner detailed in the article lost $22K from cyber hackers!

See here on why hackers have realized its easier to go after lots of little fishes worth a couple of dollars rather than going after a Moby Dick with a big wallet –

Mac OSX Lion Released – Our Advice

You may be aware that Apple released their new operating system for Intel based Mac’s yesterday called Lion. The new software boasts some really good new features such as autosave, versions, airdrop and full screen apps to name but a few. It is also reasonably priced at £21.00 and is available via the Mac App Store (USB Key delivery coming later in the year).

As with all new software we urge our customers to not race to upgrade immediately as not all of your software may be compatible with Lion. Some hardware such as printers and scanners will certainly not yet have the software drivers ready for a brand new operating system. We have also heard that some issues are being found in popular software suites such as MS Office 2011 and Filemaker Pro 11.

We will be testing Lion for the next few weeks and speaking to software manufacturers to get an idea of when they will be making their products Lion compatible. As soon as we have further information and feel it is prudent to upgrade we will let you know via the blog.

Sophos Technical Alert

On 23rd June, Sophos released a technical alert in regards to Endpoint and Small Business Products.

The advisory email was as follows;

Sophos Technical Alert

Important Advisory about Sophos Endpoint & Small Business products

We have discovered a problem that may be affecting security on a small number of computers running Sophos Anti-Virus or Sophos Endpoint Security and Control.  Although we have only had a small number of reports of this issue, we are advising all of our customers to perform certain checks as unfortunately the nature of this issue means that it is not reported in Sophos Enterprise Console or Sophos Control Centre.

Computers that might be affected:

  • Running 32bit versions of Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 only
  • Have had a malware or PUA detection (even if previously authorised) and a subsequent cleanup action between the 2nd and 10th of June 2011
  • Have not been restarted since June 10th.

If you have computers that meet ALL of the above criteria then the security may be compromised. Computers affected will show on access scanning is disabled in the Sophos Anti-Virus or Sophos Endpoint Security and Control client interface.

To recover the system you should read this endpoint advisory which includes a tool that can be used to identify potentially affected systems in the Sophos Enterprise Console and Sophos Control Centre along with a tool to detect and resolve the issue on a potentially affected computer without restarting it. If practical, simply restarting the computer will resolve the issue.

Since this alert, we at Barton have been checking through our records to ensure that none of our clients are affected by this vulnerability. As stated above, in order to be affected, all 3 of the criteria must be true. To date, we have no records of any customers that have had a PUA detection (potentially unwanted application) that has had a cleanup action run on it between the 2nd and 10th of June.

Any clients who may have run a cleanup action on any Sophos detection between the dates of the 2nd and 10th June 2011 WITHOUT notifying Barton (i.e not included in our records above), and HAVE NOT REBOOTED the machine since June 10th (normally only server systems) should immediately contact Barton to have thier machine checked at thier earliest convinience. You may also do this yourself, by following the below link:

Many Thanks,

Testimonial from Tudors Professional Services Ltd

Another welcome positive comment from one of our clients received today:

“Off the top of my head I would describe Barton as courteous, helpful, prompt in their response and very patient with non-techy clients in analysing and solving problems. I would also add ‘good value’ to that list!”

Testimonial from Royal Jewellers

Wartski, royal jewellers and designer of the recent Royal Wedding jewellery, have kindly sent us a personal thank you for assistance with their Managing Director’s computer system. Mr Munn’s note reads:

Wartski produced the wedding ring for Catherine Middleton and the ring was fashioned from a piece of Welsh gold. It was given to Prince William by The Queen shortly after the engagement was announced.

Wartski also supplied the engagement and wedding rings to Queen Elizabeth’s grandson Viscount Linley when he married The Hon. Serena Stanhope in 1993. They also made the wedding rings (also of Welsh gold) for The Prince of Wales and Mrs. Camilla Parker-Bowles for their wedding in 2005.

More information on Wartski can be found on their website www.wartski.com

IT support firm’s online backup service exposes flaws in conventional model

~ Barton Technology’s online backup with manual restore means SMEs can say ‘business as usual’ in times of crisis ~

Online Backup in Sutton, Surrey and South London

Secure data centres are a crucial part of online backup services.

Surrey based IT support provider Barton Technology has launched an online backup service which provides manual data recovery for SMEs. Unlike other IT companies, Barton’s manual data restoration usually takes less than two hours and the disk is delivered to the client the same day.  This allows the organisation that has lost data to remain open, with minimal fuss, while it’s restored. Barton Technology believes that the conventional online data backup model is fundamentally flawed due to the lengthy periods of time it takes to restore data.

All organisations using a computer need to backup their critical data to a secure place which is not located on the same site. Data backup is essential to help guard against IT problems such as accidental deletion or loss of data as well as fire and theft and is extremely useful as an aid to remote working.

The data backed up using Barton Technology’s service is housed in a UK based, purpose-built data centre, designed to keep SMEs’ records safe, secure and accessible at all times.

The data centre benefits from clean and constant power delivered by a fully redundant Riello UPS system. In the case of a mains failure, power is provided by diesel generators capable of running the facility for an indefinite period of time. In order to guarantee security of the information stored, access to the data centre is limited to security-cleared personnel and enforced by extensive CCTV monitoring and access control systems. As a result, the centre provides 99.9% uptime, meaning that the likelihood of data being unavailable when needed is very low.

“We believe in doing things better and faster,” explained Dominic Jones, managing director at Barton Technology. “We think that it’s unfair that SMEs are sold online backup services that require a considerable time to restore the data when it’s needed. It’s important for the person responsible to read the small print and make an educated decision. SMEs should have access to a reliable service, which ensures business doesn’t suffer and production doesn’t come to a grinding halt when misfortune hits.”

Barton Technology is running a free 30 day trial of its easy to use, secure and reliable backup service. Further information and software downloads for the free trial are available on the Barton Technology website. Prices for the regular service start at £9.99 for a 5GB account and back up of up to 75GB can be obtained for less than £100 per month.
