Networking Multiple Sites & Remote Working - Virtual Private Networks (VPN)

Basically, a VPN is a private network that uses a public network (usually the Internet) to connect remote sites or users together via a secure encrypted "tunnel". Instead of using a dedicated, real-world connection such as leased line, a VPN uses "virtual" connections routed through the Internet from the company's private network to the remote site or employee. In business terms, one reason a company would usually look to install a VPN, is to allow managers and sales representatives in the field, to safely connect to the office network / server and transfer files, send and receive their email and print etc.

Virtual Private Networks

Who Would Need a VPN?

Branch Offices
Business with two or more locations may safely link-up the two office networks together permitting users at either end to share information and resources as if they were all part of the same local network. Remote offices could be just down the road or on the other side of the world, the cost to connect them is the same with a VPN.

Travelling Employees & Home Users
Senior Managers, Sales Representatives & Field Engineers can all work effectively without having to visit the office so often. Whilst out of the office, they can still place orders, write emails and collect jobs as though they were sitting at a PC at their desk.

Customer Portal
Allow customers and business partners to interact with you more efficiently by providing them with a secure connection to your internal order entry / tracking systems / customer service, from the comfort and convenience of their own desktop. Having the ability to access your PC or network remotely has many applications from working from home to connecting a Company's branch offices together. Technology and security have increased over the years and it is now possible to work effectively over a remote connection. An organisation has the opportunity to cut the cost of office overheads and reduce wasted travel time by allowing secure access to email, databases and office applications to remote offices or "home-workers". Tailored solutions we provide include Thin Client, Virtual Private Networks, Web Based Applications and many more.

Terminal Services

The Terminal Services component of the Microsoft Windows Server operating system can deliver the Windows desktop, as well as the latest Windows-based applications, to virtually any desktop computing device, including those that cannot run Windows. This lets more people in an organisation take advantage of the resources provided by a distributed computing environment. Terminal Services can also be used to remotely administer a Windows based server.

When a user runs an application on a Windows based terminal server, all of the application execution takes place on the server and only the keyboard, mouse and display information are transmitted over the network. Each user sees only their individual session, which is managed transparently by the server operating system and is independent of any other client session.

  • Quicker more reliable remote access even over slow connections
  • Access all applications including databases
  • Centralised deployment and management of applications
  • Simplifies application support
  • MS-DOS, Windows-based PCs, Macintosh, UNIX and other client operating systems can be used

Webmail

Having the ability access your company email through a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) from anywhere in the world is a great advantage. You could access your email from an Internet Cafe, a friend's house or a client's office without having to install or configure any software and no emails/data will be downloaded onto the PC used.
